It’s almost 3 in the afternoon, and I have not had any Diet Coke to drink yet today. For the people who have been following my blog from following my comment links over at Pat Flynn’s Smart Passive Income blog, that may not seem like a big deal. Anyone who knows me personally is probably gasping right now, though.
I am addicted to Diet Coke, and I’m not saying that lightly. I drink about a gallon (4 liters) of Diet Coke every single day. I drink it right from 2-liter bottles, and I have a callous on my left index finger where I hold the bottle. During the winter, I have to trim the callous down so that it doesn’t get too thick and split open. Last year I made about $12,000 at my job, and I (conservatively) estimate that I spent about $1,200 on soda, or 10% of my pre-tax income. I have a problem.
When I woke up this morning, I was out of soda here at the house. To go along with leaving my job, I decided to make another rash decision this morning. I am going almost cold-turkey on Diet Coke. I am not quitting completely, because I know damn well that it wouldn’t work, but I am going to cut back so drastically that heads will spin. My hastily-laid plans consist of this so far:
- No soda before 11am.
- No soda between meals.
- No more than one unopened bottle of soda in the house at a time.
- I have to walk to the store to buy any soda that does not come with a meal.
This is already killing me. I am downing iced tea like a madman in an attempt to fight off the caffeine withdrawal headache I have already. I will have to lean pretty heavily on acetaminophen for the first two weeks or so, which is unhealthy in itself. Once the caffeine withdrawal subsides, though, I will be much, much healthier. I just need to make sure that I’m not putting so much sugar in my iced tea that it will counteract the health benefits of quitting the soda.
